I combine Shiatsu with Somatic Experiencing (SE) - a process designed to resolve habitual patterns of activation and freeze, resulting form trauma. I use a Zen Shiatsu approach to balance the flow of energy. The deeply reassuring nature of shiatsu & SE touch can provide a resource to build up capacity and regulation in the nervous system. By releasing habitual stress or survival mode the body can experience a para-sympathetic state, which enables the rest & repair. When I first had shiatsu in my 20’s, I was a regular smoker and surprised to find myself not craving a cigarette for a few hours after each session, which helped lead me to stop. Other benefits can include a letting go of hyper-vigilance during treatments, which I found allowed me to enter a deep state of rest which I was unfamiliar with. Somatic experiencing uses a talking process to track sensation and negotiate subtle experience in the body whilst staying connected to the here and now. It is non- regressive approach working with the autonomic nervous system where activation and holding patterns may still be responding to previous adverse experience.
